Internet Marketing Vs Running A Marathon
While doing my long run today I was thinking how similar having success with Internet marketing and running a marathon are. I have done both and realized how remarkable the similarities are.
I did not train for and run my first marathon at the same time as I was building my Internet businesses, but the steps of each very much mirror one another. I did not think about running a marathon when I first started running 9 years ago; I simply wanted to run a 5k race (3.1 miles). When I started with Internet marketing, I dreamed of how great it would be to make just $300 per month online; that would make my car payment!
After completing my first goal of running 3 miles, I started thinking about a 10k (6.2 miles). Heck, if I could run 3 miles, getting up to six surely was possible; I did begin running 10Ks after more training. Wow! I was making my car payment! Ok, how about my house payment and insurance ($600)…and that came too in a few months!
Hey, maybe I am a “real” runner. I can run 10Ks in a pretty good time…maybe a half marathon now (13.1 miles)? This was a bigger step…it was tough…I had a lot of setbacks along the way (running injuries). But after each setback, I would regroup and rethink my training for how I could reach my goal. Finally, I started running halves (I LOVE that distance!) Ok, I am making my house payment and its insurance payment. Can I increase it to make the house and insurance payments, AND my car payment??…maybe throw in my wife’s car payment too?? That was asking a lot it seemed at the time; it took many more trials and a LOT of errors. But guess what! Yes, that goal was achieved too!
Holy cow! I am a real runner! Was I now ready to give the Big Daddy of running a shot! 26.2 miles!! A WHOLE marathon!…THIS is a whole different ball game! Only those who have trained for and completed a marathon understand what “running a marathon” really means. Training for a marathon is a MAJOR commitment! My marathon was going to be in the spring. There can be a lot of NASTY winter days in northwest Oklahoma….right in the peak of training season for spring marathons. Training was very tough.
Hey, is there a chance I might be able to actually QUIT MY JOB with this someday?? Making an extra thousand or two a month is one thing, but supporting my wife and me COMPLETELY with only the Internet was a whole different deal! Only those who have made that leap know what I am talking about. At times, the thought of it was down right terrifying!
The big day came. Was I ready? I hoped so, and I was. It was one of the hardest things I have ever done. I won’t try to explain what it felt like going across the finish line though. I can’t describe it, but it is something I will never forget. The feeling of achievement was awesome!
The big day came. It was my last day of work at my “regular” job. I had a feeling while driving home that day a lot like one I had when I crossed that first marathon’s finish line.
The moral of the story:
Success with Internet marketing usually comes in small chunks along the way. The good news is that those small successes will accumulate and form together into larger successes! Keep training yourself; keep practicing Relentless Focused Action, KEEP AT IT and never give up!
