5. What sorts of goals should people set?

I would urge people to think big and set long-term goals that excite them, without worrying at first about how they are going to get there. It really is a shame when people limit their lives by telling themselves that what they really want isn’t realistic. The only way to find out what’s realistic is to go for it.

Why Your Goal Setting Annoys Friends, Family And Faint-hearts

It’s not unusual for people to come back from an inspiring personal development seminar, or after having read a potentially life changing book on goals and ready to take action, only to be faced with indifference and sometimes downright hostility from loved ones. Why is this the case and what can you do if it happens to you?

Celebration, Regret, And Remorse

Recently, three events occurred that forced me to experience celebration, regret, and remorse. And as I thought about each one of them, I was able to draw a lesson from each one of them.

Celebration - My teammate, good friend and role model, Mike Fowler, gave an outstanding performance at the ADCC 2007. Mike was able to win two matches against two BJJ legends (Renzo Gracie and Saulo Riberio). This was an amazing accomplishment and I was very happy for and proud of Mike. The lesson here is Mike proves what hard work, commitment to a system, getting a coach, and actually listening to him (unlike me for many years) will do for you. Congrats Mike on an excellent performance and keep up the good work!

Routines - Create Efficiency

Do you have a routine to accomplish the regular and additional tasks in your life? A disjointed routine can leave even the most robust person exhausted at the end of a busy day, not to mention for those who are managing many responsibilities. Or in the worst case, not only leave you exhausted, but leaving tasks undone.

A well-honed routine can be a boon whether you are managing many responsibilities or simply managing your usual workload. The rigors of modern life add to the richness of your life while also requiring great attention and energy. When your life is structured, the tasks you are responsible for can be laid out the day before, so that you seldom waste precious moments wondering what to tackle first.

Napoleonic Goal Setting

The chapter on desire in “Think and Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill contains a formula for what he calls “transforming desire into money,” however, this method really could be used to transform desire into pretty much anything you pick. In his own words, here are the six steps:

First. Fix in your mind the exact amount of money you desire. It is not sufficient merely to say “I want plenty of money.” Be definite as to the amount.

Second. Determine exactly what you intend to give in return for the money you desire. (There is no such reality as “something for nothing.”)
